My Honest Haircare Routine

A good hair care routine ensures that your hair stays nourished, healthy, frizz-free and strong.
I followed this routine religiously for about 4 months and I could see visible changes in my scalp.
I have a dandruff prone scalp and taking good care of it is very important to avoid adverse affects.
Just by trying out different DIY’s or changing shampoos did not result in reducing my flakes or improving my hair health, I had to heal my scalp internally too by changing my diet.

What I did?

Always prep your hair before you wash your hair by applying a hair mask or by just applying some oil. What I do is, I alternate between these two methods.

Hair Mask
Into a bowl,
-> Add 1 tbsp of hibiscus flower powder
-> Add 2 tbsp of curd
-> And 1 tbsp of fenugreek powder
If you do not have fenugreek powder, you can soak fenugreek seeds in curd overnight and grind the paste in a blender the next day. To this mixture you can add hibiscus flower powder apply it to your scalp. The quantity may vary according to your scalp, so check your length and make the mask.
Hair Oil
I use coconut oil, but you can use any hair oil that suits your scalp.
Important tips to follow :
-> Make sure you don’t over oil your scalp and leave it on for 2 hours before your hair wash. You can even leave it overnight, but it’s not recommended for people with dandruff prone scalp.
-> Make sure you heat the oil and then use it as it has many benefits like :
  • increases hair strength
  • reduces dryness of both the scalp and hair
  • help with dandruff relief
  • reduces frizz
  • fewer split ends
  • increases blood flow in the scalp, which may help promote healthier hair
Hair Wash
Into a mug,
-> Add some water and dilute your shampoo.
-> Add 1 tbsp of hibiscus flower powder to this mixture and wash your hair thoroughly.
( Avoid this step if you use the hair mask DIY with hibiscus flower powder )
-> I sometimes wash my hair with soap nuts too, this helps me in having a clean nourished scalp using all natural products.
I will write a detailed post on how to use soap nuts to wash your hair. Stay tuned..
Important tips to follow :
  • Make sure you always dilute your shampoo with water and not apply it directly to your scalp. You can use any shampoo of your choice but make sure there are not many chemicals in it, something mild with the right PH will be good.
  • Always make sure you wash your hair with lukewarm water or cold water. Avoid hot water as using hot water on your hair regularly can make it brittle, leading to increased breakage and hair loss. Moreover, hot water opens up skin pores that can make your hair roots weaker, further aggravating hair fall.
Post Hair Wash
I don’t use a conditioner, instead I use a hair rinse. Into a bowl,
-> Add 1 tbsp of Aloe Vera gel and mix it with some water. If you are using fresh Aloe Vera gel from your house plants, apply this gel mixed with water on damp hair and if you feel your hair is sticky, wash it off after keeping it on for 5/10 mins. If you are using a store bought gel, apply this gel mixed with water on damp hair and leave it on you hair without washing it with water.
Important tips to follow :
  • Dry your hair naturally without using any styling tools and make sure you use a clean comb at all times.
  • While drying your hair don’t over brush it as this might break your hair and lead to hair fall.
  • Handle your hair with care and you can see visible changes in your scalp
Diet
Just by following DIY’s your hair doesn’t become amazing. You will have to heal it internally by changing what you eat and adding right foods to your diet.

  • First thing to do as soon as you wake up it drink a glass of lukewarm water. You can add lemon and honey if you want too. But I usually drink plain water and start my day.
  • Make sure you drink enough water throughout the day and keep yourself hydrated.
  • I have lots of dry fruits and add fresh fruits and vegetables to my meals daily. This helped me in nourishing my scalp.
